The capital of La Costera and birthplace of the Borgia popes, in the south of Valencia province.
Xàtiva is a town and municipality in the province of Valencia, capital of the comarca of La Costera. In the Islamic era Arabs brought papermaking here, and later the town became the cradle of the House of Borgia, which gave the Church Popes Callixtus III and Alexander VI. Bourbon troops burned much of it in 1707, during the War of the Spanish Succession, yet it keeps a notable artistic heritage.
The town lies on the western bank of the river Albaida, 25 km from the Mediterranean, where the Valencia-Murcia and Valencia-Albacete railways meet. It has the highest number of enclaves of any municipality in Spain. In 1822 it briefly became capital of the Province of Xàtiva.
