Get to know Isla Cristina

Isla Cristina is a town on the Costa Occidental of Huelva, close to the Portuguese border and facing the Atlantic. It began as a summer fishing camp of Catalans and Valencians and became permanently settled after the Lisbon earthquake of 1755. Fishing is still the main activity, and its catch is prized throughout Spain.

The municipality includes the Isla Cristina marshes, a protected natural area, and pine woods on the coastal dunes. In July and August visitors from Seville come for kilometres of Blue Flag beaches. Its east-west sunsets inspired poets such as Rafael Alberti, Juan Ramón Jiménez and Luis Cernuda.
