A provincial capital in northern Aragon at the foot of the outer Pyrenean ranges, known as the gateway to the Pyrenees.
Huesca is the capital of the province of Huesca and of the Hoya de Huesca comarca, in northern Aragon. It was the capital of the Kingdom of Aragon between 1096 and 1118, and earlier the Roman Osca, known for its mint. Today it is a bishop's see and holds its main festival, the Fiestas de San Lorenzo, from 9 to 15 August.
The city lies where the outer ranges of the Pyrenees begin, with views of the Sierra de Guara, and the Isuela river runs through it. Besides the main town, the municipality includes Apiés, Cuarte, Huerrios, Banariés, Buñales, Bellestar del Flumen and Tabernas de Isuela. Cereal fields surround the city.
