A Biscay town in the Oka valley, home of the Tree of Guernica, where the General Assembly of Biscay used to meet.
Guernica, officially Gernika-Lumo, is a town in the Busturialdea comarca of Biscay, within the Urdaibai natural area. The General Assembly of Biscay met here under an oak known as the Tree of Guernica, a symbol of Biscayan liberties. On April 26, 1937 the town was bombed by the Condor Legion and the Italian Aviazione Legionaria, an attack that inspired Picasso's painting Guernica.
The municipality was formed in the nineteenth century when the anteiglesia of Luno and the town of Guernica were joined. It sits in the valley of the river Oka, which forms the Guernica estuary, and borders Forua, Kortezubi, Arratzu, Ajangiz, Muxika and Errigoiti. The air raid siren from that day is kept at the Astra cultural centre.
