Guadix, Granada, Andalusia, Spain
A town of cave houses in the Hoya de Guadix, on the northern foothills of the Sierra Nevada, with a cathedral and an alcazaba.
Guadix is the capital of its comarca in the province of Granada, Andalusia, set at 913 metres in the centre of the Hoya de Guadix, a high plain below the northern slopes of the Sierra Nevada. It is one of the oldest settlements in the Iberian Peninsula: the Romans knew it as the colony of Julia Gemella Acci, which is why locals are called accitanos. Today it is known for its cave houses, the Cathedral of the Incarnation and the Alcazaba.
The town has a historic centre around Calle Ancha, the districts of Santiago, San Miguel and Ermita Nueva, and three main avenues: Mariana Pineda, Buenos Aires and Medina Olmos. The municipality also takes in Estación de Guadix, Bácor, Hernán-Valle, Paulenca, Belerda, Olivar and Los Balcones. Guadix lies on the Linares-Baeza to Almería railway, among gullies and badlands.
