Get to know Guadarrama

Guadarrama is a town in the Cuenca del Guadarrama comarca of the Community of Madrid, and its name comes from the Arabic for sandy river. It was granted the status of villa under Ferdinand the Catholic. Later Fernando VI had the road to A Coruña built through the Guadarrama Pass, and Napoleon's Grande Armée marched along it in 1808.

The Civil War left the town destroyed after almost three years on the front line, so what you see today was built in the mid-20th century. The nearby Sierra de Guadarrama draws Madrid residents seeking cooler air, and the population grows a lot in summer. Some scenes of The Fall of the Roman Empire were filmed here.
