Guadalajara is a city in Castilla-La Mancha and the capital of the province of the same name. It was founded under Muslim rule, and its Arabic name means river of stones. The city grew with the rise of the Mendoza family and was granted the title of city in 1460.
The old town sits on a hill between the Alamín and Coquín ravines, beside the Henares. Winters are long and cold, summers short and very hot. The city has an AVE station and commuter trains to Madrid, and the municipality also includes the villages of Iriépal, Taracena, Usanos and Valdenoches.
