A town and port on the north coast of Tenerife, below a cliff, whose history changed with an eruption in 1706.
Garachico is a municipality on the island of Tenerife, in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in the Canary Islands. It belongs to the natural comarca of Isla Baja, together with Los Silos, Buenavista del Norte and El Tanque. The population is 4940 (2025).
The town began as a port after the conquest of Tenerife, founded in 1496 by the Genoese banker Cristóbal de Ponte. It exported Malmsey wine until, in 1706, lava from an eruption filled the bay and destroyed part of the town. In 1980 it received the Gold Medal of Fine Arts.
