Get to know Galapagar

Galapagar is a town and municipality in the Community of Madrid, north-west of the capital, and has grown faster than any other town in the area. Its name comes from galápago, Spanish for turtle, after the turtle-filled lake beside the old village. Royal hunting parties made it important, and the dramatist Jacinto Benavente, a Nobel laureate, is buried here.

El Pocillo is one of its parts, and the church of the Asunción stands in the old centre. Cercanías trains stop at Galapagar-La Navata, and interurban buses run to Moncloa in Madrid. Neighbours include Torrelodones, Collado Villalba, Colmenarejo, Las Rozas, El Escorial and San Lorenzo de El Escorial.
