Ferrol is the capital of the Ferrol comarca, in the north of the province of A Coruña, Galicia. It stands on a peninsula by the Ferrol estuary. For most of its history it has been a major naval shipbuilding centre, and today it has several yards of the state-owned Navantia group.
The rural part of the municipality faces the Atlantic, with beaches such as Doniños, San Xurxo and Covas popular with surfers. Parishes include Serantes, San Martín de Cobas, San Román de Doniños, Santa Eugenia de Mandiá and San Jorge de Mariñá. Ferrol is also one of the starting points of the English Way of the Camino de Santiago.
