The town lies in a valley that the river Deba crosses. It borders Mendaro to the north, Bergara and Soraluze to the south, Azkoitia to the east, and Eibar and Etxebarria to the west. It was once called Villamayor de Marquina, and it holds the titles of noble and loyal town.
