Get to know Elche

Elche is a city in the Valencian Community and the capital of the Baix Vinalopó comarca. It began as the Iberian town of Helike and under Rome became the Colonia Iulia Illici Augusta. Today it is the centre of the footwear industry in Spain, and its Mystery Play, a medieval sacred drama, is recognised by UNESCO.

The Palm Grove, the largest in Europe, runs through the city itself. Part of the municipality reaches the Mediterranean, while the city proper lies inland. The main airport of the province of Alicante also sits within Elche's boundaries and serves both cities.
