Get to know El Escorial

El Escorial is a municipality in the northwest of the Community of Madrid, at the foot of the southern slope of the Sierra de Guadarrama. Its origins go back to the eleventh and twelfth centuries, when this side of the mountains was resettled. Philip II chose the area for his monastery of San Lorenzo in 1561, and the town was granted the status of villa in 1565.

The famous monastery stands in the neighbouring municipality of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, just to the north. El Escorial itself is home to the park of La Granjilla de la Fresneda. The name comes from the slag, escoria in Spanish, left by an old local foundry.
