El Bierzo is a comarca in the province of León, Castile and León. It covers most of the upper basin of the Sil river and is surrounded by mountains on all sides, which sets it apart from the neighbouring lands. Mining once drove the local economy; today fruit, vegetables and wines of the Bierzo designation of origin lead the way.

Its capital is the town of Ponferrada, while Villafranca del Bierzo is the historical capital. Bembibre, Cacabelos, Camponaraya, Carracedelo, Fabero and Toreno are among its other towns. The climate is a mild Mediterranean one, and besides Spanish, Galician and Leonese are spoken here.
