Get to know El Astillero

El Astillero is a municipality in Cantabria on the Bay of Santander, 7.5 km from the capital and at the foot of Peña Cabarga. Its name means The Shipyard: yards serving the Port of Santander have worked here since the sixteenth century and are still in use. It is also known for hosting the Spanish national rowing championships.

The estuaries of Solía, El Carmen and Astillero surround the town, and where they meet the bay lie wetlands where migratory birds nest all year round. It borders Camargo, Villaescusa, Piélagos, Medio Cudeyo and Marina de Cudeyo. The town sits just 20 metres above sea level.
