The city of the Hanging Houses, its old town perched on a gorge between the Júcar and Huécar rivers, a World Heritage Site.
Cuenca is the capital of the province of Cuenca in Castilla-La Mancha. It grew around the Moorish fortress of Qal'at Kūnka, which Alfonso VIII took for Castile in 1177. Its old town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996, and Holy Week and the Religious Music Week are its main events.
The old city sits on a narrow escarpment between the Júcar and Huécar rivers, on the western edge of the Iberian System mountains. Here you find the cathedral, the Casas Colgadas and more than ten museums, including the Museum of Spanish Abstract Art and the Museum of Cuenca. The municipality is one of the largest in Spain by area.
