Its capital, Madrid, is also the capital of Spain, and its central position makes it a key node of the country's transport network.
Most people live in the Madrid metropolitan area, with Móstoles, Alcalá de Henares, Leganés, Getafe, Fuenlabrada, Alcorcón and Torrejón de Ardoz around the capital. The land falls from the Central System ranges in the north to the Tagus in the south. Four World Heritage Sites lie here: El Escorial, the university and old town of Alcalá de Henares, the cultural landscape of Aranjuez, and the Paseo del Prado with Buen Retiro park.
