Colmenar Viejo is a town and municipality in the Community of Madrid, north of the capital on the M-607 motorway. It belongs to the comarca of Cuenca Alta del Manzanares. Until 1991 its territory included Tres Cantos, which became a separate municipality that year.
It borders Madrid, Tres Cantos, Hoyo de Manzanares, Manzanares el Real, Soto del Real, Miraflores de la Sierra, Algete and San Sebastián de los Reyes, among others. Two military bases sit within the municipality, including that of the Army Airmobile Forces.
