Castro Urdiales is a seaport on the Bay of Biscay at the eastern edge of Cantabria, known for its anchovies and beaches.
Castro Urdiales is a coastal town at the far eastern end of Cantabria, bordering the province of Biscay to the east, Liendo to the west and Guriezo to the south. It lies between Santander and Bilbao. Its castle and the Gothic parish church of Santa María de la Asunción date from the Middle Ages.
Tourism, fishing and the canning of sardines and anchovies keep the town going, with factories such as Lolin and La Castreña. Beaches and a scenic harbour draw many visitors, and the summer population can double or even triple.
