A provincial capital on a plain facing the Mediterranean, with the seaside district of Grau and the Costa del Azahar.
Castellón de la Plana, or Castelló in Valencian, is the capital of the province of Castellón and of the Plana Alta comarca, in the Valencian Community. Its people lived on the Magdalena hill until King James I allowed them to move down to the plain, and the Magdalena festivities still mark that origin. The city is home to Jaume I University.
The main urban core lies a little inland, while the detached district of Grau grew around the port. The Desert de les Palmes range rises to the north. The Greenwich Meridian crosses the 40th parallel here, marked by a monolith in Meridian Park.
