A town on Huelva's western coast by the Piedras estuary, with the beaches of El Rompido and Nuevo Portil.
Cartaya is a municipality in the province of Huelva, in the Costa Occidental comarca. The present town was founded in the 15th century by the Marquis of Gibraleón, Pedro de Zúñiga, on the estuary of the Piedras river. Its name comes from the Phoenician word Carteia, meaning city, and remains from the late Roman Empire have been found nearby.
The newer settlements of El Rompido and Nuevo Portil have grown fast in recent decades. Beaches include El Rompido, San Miguel, Nuevo Portil and the western end of El Portil. In town stand the Castle of the Zúñiga, the former Convent of the Blessed Trinity and the Hermitage of Santa María de Consolación.
