The second city of La Rioja and the heart of Rioja Baja, heir to Roman Calagurris and birthplace of Quintilian.
Calahorra is a city in La Rioja, the main town of Rioja Baja and second in the region only to Logroño. As the Roman city of Calagurris Nassica Iulia, it became famous for holding out against Pompey's siege. It has been a bishop's seat since antiquity and is the birthplace of Quintilian and the poet Prudentius.
Many monuments and traces of its past survive, most of them Roman. The surrounding land is known for farming and vineyards. To the north it borders San Adrián and Azagra in Navarre.
