A city on a narrow slice of land surrounded by the Atlantic and the Bay of Cádiz, joined to San Fernando by a thin isthmus.
Cádiz is the capital of the province of Cádiz in Andalusia. Founded by the Phoenicians as a trading post, it is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Western Europe. In the 18th century its port held a near monopoly on trade with the Americas.
The Old Town inside the remnants of the walls takes up a large part of the city, with quarters such as El Pópulo, La Viña and Santa María. Narrow winding alleys there open onto large plazas, and newer areas have wide avenues. Parks with exotic plants, such as the historic Parque Genovés, dot the city.
