Prehistoric cave with hand stencils in the urban area of Cáceres, on Avenida de Cervantes.
The Cave of Maltravieso is in the city of Cáceres, on Avenida de Cervantes, within the built-up area. It was occupied by people at different times in prehistory, and lies in the limestone area south of the capital, popularly known as El Calerizo.
It was discovered in 1951 and shows traces of human occupation from the Middle Paleolithic. A recent study dated its hand stencils much earlier than had been thought. A visitor centre opened in 1999, and nearby caves include El Conejar and Santa Ana.
