The capital of its province in central Extremadura, with a medieval walled city listed by UNESCO.

Get to know Cáceres

Cáceres is the capital and most populated municipality of the province of Cáceres, in the centre of Extremadura, and hosts Extremadura's Regional Supreme Court. Its municipal area is the largest of any in Spain. The medieval walled city was declared a World Heritage City by UNESCO in 1986.

The city lies at the feet of the Sierra de la Mosca and on the Vía de la Plata path of the Camino de Santiago. Areas include Mejostilla, La Sierrilla, El Cuartillo, Ceres Golf and the University Campus, with Valdesalor further out. The University of Extremadura and two astronomical observatories are here, and the city usually empties in summer.
