Get to know Bilbao

Bilbao is the capital of Biscay and the largest city in the Basque Country and in northern Spain. Diego López V de Haro founded it in the late 13th century, and its port grew rich on exports of wool and Biscayan iron. Heavy industry followed, and today the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao leads its renewal as a services city.

Abando, Deusto, Begoña, Uríbarri, Ibaiondo, Recalde, Basurto-Zorroza and Ocharcoaga-Churdínaga are among its districts. The city runs along the Bilbao estuary, with two small mountain ranges around its core. Summers are mild, sunshine is limited and rain is frequent.
