Benavente is a town and municipality in the north of the province of Zamora, in Castile and León. It stands on an important communications hub north of the provincial capital. King Ferdinand II of León resettled it and granted it a fuero, a charter of local law, in 1167, and its earlier name was Malgrat or Malgrado.

The town rises on a hill in the middle of a broad plain. On one side lies the Tierra de Campos, on the other the valleys watered by the Esla, Tera and Órbigo rivers.
