A fishing town at the mouth of the river Barbate, near Cape Trafalgar and known for almadraba tuna fishing.
Barbate is a municipality in the comarca of La Janda, in the province of Cádiz, Andalusia, on the Atlantic coast close to the Strait of Gibraltar. Fishing has always been its trade, above all bluefin tuna caught with the traditional almadraba nets. It became independent from Vejer de la Frontera in 1938.
Its land includes La Breña y Marismas del Barbate Natural Park and Cape Trafalgar, a natural monument off which the famous battle was fought. The town itself lies at the mouth of the river Barbate. Alongside fishing, there is fish salting, boatbuilding and tourism.
