Banyoles is a town in the province of Girona and the capital of the comarca of Pla de l'Estany, in the heart of the Girona comarcas. It is an established industrial centre, and many residents commute to nearby Girona. Its lake hosted the rowing events of the 1992 Olympic Games and the World Rowing Championships in 2004.

Part of the municipality is taken up by the lake, the second largest natural lake in the Iberian Peninsula and a base for sport and leisure. Besides the town, the municipality includes the small settlements of Puigpalter, el Mas Usall and Lió.
