Get to know Balaguer

Balaguer is the capital of the comarca of La Noguera, in the province of Lleida, and the seat of its judicial district. It is the third largest municipality in the province and a centre of market gardening, industry and culture. Ermengol VI of Urgell took it from the Moors in 1106 and made it the capital of the counts of Urgell.

The historic town lies on the right bank of the Segre, while a newer part grew on the left bank after the Civil War. The Gothic Pont de Sant Miquel spans the river. Above the town stand the Gothic church of Santa Maria and the old wall, and the Lleida - La Pobla de Segur railway stops here.
