Get to know Badajoz

Badajoz is the capital of the province of Badajoz and the most populated city in Extremadura, as well as its main economic, commercial and service centre. Founded by Ibn Marwan, it became the seat of the Taifa of Badajoz, and its border position shaped it into a walled stronghold. It is today the seat of the Archdiocese of Mérida-Badajoz.

The Guadiana flows through the city from east to west, then turns south to form the border with Portugal. The municipality includes settlements such as Gévora, Villafranco del Guadiana and Valdebótoa, and is the only urban special protection area for birds in Spain. Together with Elvas and Campo Maior, it forms the Badajoz-Elvas-Campo Maior eurocity.
