Get to know Ayamonte

Ayamonte is a town in the province of Huelva, at the western end of the Costa Occidental comarca, where the Guadiana river meets the sea at the Portuguese border. Its origins go back to Phoenician times. From the sixteenth century it was one of the province's leading trading towns, with strong links to the Spanish colonies in America.

Fishing and canning drove the economy in the twentieth century, and tourism has since taken over. Visitors come for the beaches of Isla Canela and the town's historic monuments. The Guadiana International Bridge connects Ayamonte with the Algarve.
