Avilés is a town and municipality in Asturias, on the Avilés estuary. Along with Oviedo and Gijón, it is one of the main cities of the Principality. Mainly industrial, it grew around steelmaking in the mid-twentieth century.

The old town brings together palaces, noble houses, churches, squares and large parks, and beaches such as Salinas are close by. Besides the town itself, the municipality covers parishes such as San Cristóbal de Entreviñas, Miranda, Navarro, Corros and Laviana. The Cantabrian motorway, commuter trains and buses all meet at one interchange.
