Muhammad I, founder of the Emirate of Granada, was born here, in the Alcázar, now the Hospital de San Miguel and known as the Casa del Rey. Its monuments include the Almohad cistern, the church of Santa María, the church of El Carmen and the Torre de San Martín. The economy rests on olives and olive oil, with furniture and baking industries too.
