San Francisco 41 · 3 min walk
Aranda de Duero is the capital of the Ribera del Duero wine region, with a network of underground cellars beneath its old town.
Aranda de Duero is a city in the south of the province of Burgos, Castile and León, where the Duero and Arandilla rivers meet and the A-1 and A-11 roads cross. The Council of Aranda was held here in 1473, and the town plan drawn in 1503 is the oldest urban map in the country. It is also the third largest industrial centre in Castile and León, with a large Michelin plant and the Leche Pascual group.
Old underground wine cellars run beneath the historic centre. Landmarks include the churches of Santa María la Real and San Juan, now a museum of sacred art, and the Berdugo palace where Napoleon stayed in 1808. The town is known for roast lamb, lechazo, and for morcilla de Aranda, and the Cañada Real Segoviana passes through it.
