Amposta is the capital of the comarca of Montsià, in the province of Tarragona, south of Barcelona on the Mediterranean coast. The town sits on the Ebro river, barely above sea level and not far from the river mouth. Rice growing and services drive the local economy, alongside food, paper and furniture industries.
Besides the town itself, the municipality takes in Poblenou del Delta, part of Balada and the Valletes area. The GR 92 long-distance footpath along the Mediterranean coast has a staging point here.
