Town in Ciudad Real with the world's largest mercury deposits, a World Heritage Site since 2012.
Almadén is a town and municipality in the province of Ciudad Real, in Castile-La Mancha, in the Sierra Morena. Its cinnabar mines, the source of mercury, hold the largest reserves in the world and were already worked in the days of Strabo, Vitruvius and Pliny.
The mines are now closed. In 2012 they were declared a World Heritage Site together with those of Idrija in Slovenia. The name comes from Arabic and means the mine.
