Alfaro, Rioja, Spain
Alfaro · 15 min walk
The largest municipality in La Rioja and the head town of La Rioja Baja, known for the storks that return every year to nest.
Alfaro sits in the east of La Rioja, in La Rioja Baja, on the border with Navarre. It heads the comarca named after it and is the sixth largest town in La Rioja after Logroño, Calahorra, Arnedo, Haro and Lardero. In Roman times it was the municipium of Graccurris, named after Tiberius Sempronius Gracchus.
The Ebro crosses the north of the municipality, where the Alhama joins it after curving around Alfaro to the west. From here the whole Ebro riverside is in view, which is why the town's coat of arms bears a key and the motto Alfaro, clavis Castellae. Every year the Storks of Alfaro come back to nest here.
