A Illa de Arousa is the only island municipality in Galicia. It lies in the province of Pontevedra, in the comarca of O Salnés, in the heart of the Ría de Arousa. One of the longest bridges in Spain links it to the mainland.

Its economy rests on fishing, mussel farming on rafts and shellfish gathering, with tourism too. There is a single parish, San Xulián, and five ports, with Xufre the most important. Places of interest include the area around the lighthouse, the Carreirón Natural Park, a protection zone for herons and other birds, and beaches such as A Area da Secada and O Vao.
